Pimlico - Saturday, May 18, 2019 144th Preakness Stakes: A field of thirteen is unusually large which should make it a little more interesting for a race that typically favors speed. This is a fairly contentious race and four or five colts can be considered legitimate contenders. If #4 Improbable, one of my choices in the Derby two weeks ago, lives up to his potential, he will again be one of the public favorites to win at post time. The Winning at the Track (WATT) speed / pace program has identified #12 Anothertwistafate (6:1) and #4 Improbable (5:2) as the likely pacesetters; and those two, along with #7 Alwaysmining (8:1) as the top three selections among the "Best-4" PM-rated horses in this race. It's worth noting that it was #1 War of Will (4:1) that was forced out and checked in the final strides of the Derby. So, don't be surprised if he attracts some attention and good money in the pools. Looking for one or two long shots to play in the exotics? Consider #2 Bourbon War (12:1) (I like his sire, Tapit). Also, #13 Win Win Win (15:1) is speedy and could be in the race if the track is dry and very fast - not to mention his proven ability to run late. So, I'll stick with the WATT program selections: #4 Improbable to win, along with #7 Alwaysmining to place. #12 Anothertwistafate could hang on for third. If you like trifectas, watch out for a closer. Results: Among the past thirty-three Preakness Stakes races that I've handicapped with WATT, this ranks as one of the strangest of all. In a field of thirteen, five trainers gave instructions to go out early to be a pacesetter. #1 War of Will, along with #12, Anothertwistafate and #7 Alwaysmining, were no surprise. But #3 Warrior's Charge and #6 Market King were asked to do the same. Mike Smith, first time aboard #4 Improbable (usually with good early speed), decided to hold back. As the race progressed, #1 was well placed and proved in the stretch that his Derby mishap was just a fluke. At the finish line it was #1 War of Will (6:1) and the totally unpredictable #10 Everfast (25:1). Third was #5 Owndale (7:1). The 1-10 exacta paid $947 ... and a 1-10-5 trifecta ticket ($2) returned almost $9,400. So, now, it's on to the Belmont. Thus far, this is proving to be a very, very weird Triple Crown.

Handicapping Rules to Consider
1. Your Key Horse will be among the three highest PM-Rated horses 85-90% of the time.
2. One of the two Pacesetters will be in the exacta about 50% of the time
3. Look for "Talent Gaps" among your top three or four.
4. Question any Key Horse that has not run the "Race Minimum" in its last three races.
5. The first Contender selection is highly reliable using the new interactive program.
6. Avoid MSW and Maiden Claiming races featuring more than three first-time starters.
Perhaps there should be a rule #7 ... Maintain a positive attitude. Scared money rarely wins at the race track. There are many external factors that could influence the way your day unfolds. One of the best cartoonists of our day, the late Jeff MacNelly, presents one of them here:
